Burghley 7

On a wet and cold Mother’s Day, 1,330 runners took to the roads of Stamford and Burghley, joined by 19 runners from Grantham Running Club. Despite the wet conditions from the start, GRC were in fine spirits and unfazed by the mud.

The 7-mile mixed terrain route started off in the stunning grounds of Burghley House estate, on the driveway heading towards the Tudor gatehouse of Bottle Lodges. Runners then headed out onto the gorgeous traffic-free Georgian streets of Stamford. They then looped through woodland, the deer park and rolling fields up some lovely hills that makes running fun, before heading back into the private area of the estate where the runners were treated to a downhill finish in front of the spectacular Burghley House.

GRC produced some fine running, with some taking on the challenge for the first time.

It was a family affair for the Wallaces with Catherine, Daniel and their daughter Katie setting off together. Daniel took an early lead, leaving Catherine and Katie to run the route together. Katie wanted to run alongside her mum with it being Mother’s Day, so they crossed the finish line together in 1:08:05 (Katie) and 1:08:06 (Catherine). Daniel completed the route in 57:50 giving him a new course PB.

Marj Spendlow, who had run the course back in 2022 wondered why she signed up for it again knowing what lay ahead. She completed the course in 58:15 giving herself a new course PB by over 2 minutes.

For Paula Ebbins, this was her first time at Burghley and she loved the course, especially the downhill towards the finish completing in a time of 1:00:17 and 10th in her age category.

Balint Beni was another first timer and was happy to achieve a time of 52:35 and enjoyed the fast finish.

Susan Copping showed some impressive running after completing the course In a staggering 58:58 beating her time by almost 4 minutes from the previous year where she ran 1:02:54 .

Robert Pask loved the event, and it represented a big step forward in his recovery from recent health issues. He was very happy with his time of 57:32.

First back for GRC was Clive George who completed the course in an impressive time of 49:02, giving him a course PB and first in his age category.
