London Royal Parks Half Marathon

Grantham Running Club’s Alison Clark and Karen Carter secured ballot places for the Oysho London Royal Parks Half Marathon on 11 October.

Both took a pressure-free approach, soaking up the sights and atmosphere.

Sadly, injury prevented fellow club member Wendy Smith from taking part.

Starting on Kensington Road, the route passed Wellington Arch, Buckingham Palace, the Houses of Parliament, Trafalgar Square, Admiralty Arch, Hyde Park, Marble Arch and Kensington Palace before a quiet finish alongside the Royal Albert Hall.

Music and excitement filled the start line as runners of all ages and experience, from fun runners to seasoned fundraisers, came together through sport.

Karen ran for Cats Protection, finishing in 01:57:14.

Alison finished in 2:24:08, a little slower than planned after being tripped in mile six and taking a couple of walking breaks before continuing.

Both enjoyed the event, with a cool, shaded start giving way to warm sunshine.

Crowds of spectators, friends and families lined the route with slogan boards, joined by bands, choirs and charity stations, while marshals and volunteers kept runners supported throughout.

The race village offered food stalls, massage bays, merchandise stands and photo points.
Organisation was strong, with an event app providing all the essential information beforehand.
Sustainability took centre stage: a plastic-bottle-free course, compostable cups, a recycled-material T-shirt and an FSC-certified wooden medal.

Their verdict: a race to recommend and one to tick off the list.
