On Friday 8th August, 23 of Grantham Running Club’s finest descended on the village of Scredington for the Sleaford Striders Summer 10k event. This race was the latest fixture on Grantham Running Club’s own GP series.
Starting and finishing at Scredington Village Hall, the route is on quiet roads with some gentle hills and a welcome descent down Scredington Road back into the village. The evening was very warm, and a slight headwind halfway round was a mixed blessing. On the one hand it cooled the runners down but also hampered efforts a little, with many runners commenting that the second half of the race seemed much harder than the first.
First back and running at a controlled pace throughout was Gavin Potter with an impressive time of 36:33. This placed Gavin in 9th position overall.
Matthew Atter hit the halfway mark exactly where he wanted to be but faded slightly in the second half of the race, finishing in a time of 40:43, closely followed by Jack Heathershaw who ran a very similar race in 40:48.
First lady back for Grantham was Andrea Ward in a time of 53:01. This was Andreas’ first official road 10k for the club. Andrea was closely followed by Caroline Davis in a time of 53:24. Third lady back was Julie Gilbert in a time of 54:55. Julie was one of the few athletes to have achieved a quicker second half of the race and was pleased to have paced the race so well.
As it was Sleaford, there was only one reason all the athletes keep entering this race…..CAKE. Once again it didn’t disappoint as there was plenty for all the deserving runners. An extremely well organised event, there were lots of happy marshals cheering everyone on.
