It was back to school for GRC runners Stefan Latter and Daniel Pearce on Tuesday 6th June as the field at Newark Academy was the setting for the second race in a memorial series.
The 36th Gordon Whelbourn Running Week commenced on June 5th. There were a series of 5 races during the week, inspired by the former teacher who supported local sports during his lifetime.
Runners are invited to do as many or as few of the around 5k distance routes as they would like to attempt with the emphasis firmly on a friendly, fun, and good-humoured atmosphere.
Tuesday’s edition was well marshalled and supported, with over 150 runners tackling 4 laps of the school field in a tough cross country style race. The course measured around 5.4k so grit and determination was required to get the job done on a surprisingly cold June night.
Dan started the quicker of the two GRC runners with Stef putting a late surge in to the finish line to separate them both by just 1 second.
Both agreed that the course was hard going with quite long grass in sections, but the short journey up the A1 was worth it for the atmosphere.
Stef placed 15th 22:34
Dan placed 16th 22:35
Winner was Conor Pacey of Newark AC 18:02
