GRC 5K

The ever-growing Grantham Running Club 5k race took place at Harrowby Hall Lane, attracting a bumper 64 runners all attempting to take advantage of the cool conditions on the day. The club pulled out all the stops this time, providing a free of charge fully licenced race with a refreshing beer given to all the finishers and volunteers.

First across the line was in the men’s field was new member Jake Richardson, crossing the line in a new club record (2nd claim) time of 15:48. Jake is an established runner in the elite fields of the E. Midlands race scene and whilst the has ambitions to get back to his best, he is now enjoying the more social side of his running.

Next was the consistent Gavin Potter with 17:35, failing to improve on his best set of 17:11 set in May but still running a super impressive time. Gavin is determined to break the illustrious 17 min barrier which will surely come given his current trajectory.
In 3rd place was the men’s club captain Sam Jepson who’s edging back to his best form. Sam set out to break 18mins and he did it within a gnat’s whisker with a time of 17:59.

First in the ladies field was Sarah Chynoweth who is returning to running after a maternity break. In her first race for over 2 years Sarah is making huge progress, clocking a time of 21:03, a time which she will fancy her chances of beating before the season is out.

Next was Rachel Hamilton, running a 5s PB with a time of 21:07 in her first road race of 2024. Rachel was closely followed by Hannah Whittaker who also clocked a small PB with a time of 21:18. Both athletes are edging closer to that coveted sub 21min marker.

Performances were strong. A super impressive 44 club members ran either a PB or attempted the distance in a race setting for the first time. Highlights of which include:
Emma Duncan who took a big chunk off her PB with a time of 25:15, beating her previous best time set last year by well over 1min.

The standout ladies performer is without doubt the returning Edina Burns, in her first race for 5 years. Edina smashed the 30min mark for the first time by 1min 22secs and is clearly enjoying her running again.

James McMullen just keeps on getting better. His PB is now set at 20:07 after breaking his previous best by 1min and is now agonisingly close the sub 20min mark.

Jaqueline Jacobs broke a 6-year PB by a huge 32 seconds to clock 27:55.

Andrew MacAllister turned heads when he broke a 10yr PB by 32s (yes that’s right 10years!) in what isn’t a favoured distance for him but one he clearly put himself through the mill for!

The star of the men’s field was young Riley Maksymiw-Magan who exceeded all expectations to run a super impressive 18:59 in his first attempt at the distance and his best race to date. Exiting times ahead for Riley!
