Yr Wyddfa Ultra 50 – Snowdon

On the 6th September, GRC member Dale Towning took on his biggest challenge to date on his ultra running journey, taking on the Yr Wyddfa Ultra 50.

The setting was Snowdonia National Park and the race was a 45-mile epic route which took the competitors to the top of Snowdon (a literal MOUNTAIN) and included 3,254m of ascent.

The difficulty of the challenge at hand was hinted at with strict entry criteria, it wasnโ€™t a case of pay your money and turn up, each applicant was assessed individually before being allowed to enter and the kit list was extensive.

Dale had an early start on race day with a 4:15 registration then go time was 6:15. With friends and family tracking him online at home, Dale was making good progress, enjoying the awesome views and brutal climbs and descents.

However, the mountain is a cruel mistress and after 9.5 hours and (a frankly awesome) 29.5 miles, he had to make the tough decision to stop, a combination of injury and the threat of exhaustion bringing his event to an end.

Dale will be going back next year, determined to conquer the mountain, and forewarned about whatโ€™s in store, heโ€™ll be ready for it.
